As environmental concerns become closer to the forefront of our society’s priorities, it’s being recognised more and more that we all need to take action to protect our planet.
Biodiversity Net Gain
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a UK Government strategy designed to ensure that when land is developed, there is also some contribution to the recovery of nature. It’s a way of making sure the habitat for wildlife is left in a better state than it was before development began.
Subsequently, the Government and DEFRA are now putting pressure on developers and construction companies to make sure they are providing more biodiversity within all of their construction projects. It will apply to all developments under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 from November 2023, and small sites from April 2024.
To comply with the new rules, developers will need to avoid any loss of habitat on areas of lands they plan to carry out development works on. They can do this by revegetating areas onsite to create more natural habitat and ecosystems and in general, creating additional green spaces and greener, more natural infrastructure on developments.
